Named for its long, curving horns, the scimitar-horned
oryx stands about 4 feet tall. Its horns may add another 3 feet of
height to its body. The scimitar-horned oryx once found throughout
northern Africa, was restricted to the southern rim of the Sahara by the
early 1980s. For all probabilities, captive herds in Texas have
saved this animal from extinction.

They have a mane and a tufted tail and have dark patches on the face and
forehead, a dark streak on either side of the eye, and dark markings on
the body and legs. The coat is whitish and the horns, present in both
sexes, are long, sharp-tipped, and straight or curved.
